Planning a Tanzania safari is one of the most rewarding travel decisions you'll make — and one of the most complex. Our specialists have walked every trail, slept under every star, and know exactly when and where to be for the experience you're dreaming of.
Over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 400,000 Thomson's gazelles make a continuous 1,800km circular migration. Understanding where they are each month is the key to planning the perfect safari.
"People obsess over the river crossings in August, but my honest recommendation is January for calving season. You'll see 10x more animal action — lion kills, cheetah hunts, hyena packs — than at any other time of year. And fewer tourists. If you can do only one time, do January."
Low golden light, maximum animal activity, and calm weather. Dry season (Jun–Oct) for sharp visibility and animals congregating at water sources.
Wildebeest calving Jan–Feb, antelope fawns Nov–Dec. Green landscapes, excellent bird watching, and very active predators hunting weak calves.
Two dry windows: Jan–Feb (cold and clear) and Jun–Oct (warmer). Avoid the long rains (Apr–May) — trails are hazardous and summit visibility poor.
Jan–Feb are perfect: hot, dry, calm Indian Ocean. Jun–Oct works well for the west coast. Avoid Apr–May (Zanzibar's long rains) and Ramadan's busiest weeks.
Shoulder seasons (Nov, Mar, Jun) offer 20–40% lower rates. Lodge prices drop significantly in low season while game viewing remains excellent in the parks.
Tanzania has 1,100+ bird species. The green season (Nov–Apr) sees millions of Palearctic migratory birds arriving. Ngorongoro and Tarangire are world-class birding destinations.
